The Northwest Knows How to Connect!By Lori Richardson, Northwest Bureau Chief
Lori's Bio
Here in the top left corner of the country, there is a lot happening when it comes to networking. In this first update from the NW, we’ll offer an overview of some of the events and resources considered “best of the NW” As a long time connector in the Greater Seattle business community, I’ve been clued-in on, and participated in many great and helpful resources. We will dive into a multitude of them over time, so if you know of a “mover and shaker” or as we call them, a “master networker”, please send me a note. If you know of an event or resource others need to know about, let us know. Remember, a few people, connected, can make a great difference in the lives and business success of others. Since this report covers WA, OR, ID, MT, and WY, input from the field is critical. Thanks in advance, and I look forward to your insights. I would give the “most valuable resource” award in the Seattle area to website I Love Seattle – the Seattle Networking Guide. Gerard Wirz, president of I.L.S. Communications, Inc. publishes this jewel of a website for those new to the area, or anyone wanting the best overview of business, civic, and social events happening. Thousands use this site each month to track down event details, plus master calendars from various media outlets. While at this site, be sure to check out Seattle Spin and the Seattle Times Business Events calendars for the latest. There are many interesting events that happen in the Pacific Northwest – for nearly every industry, niche, and specialty. One new “non-networking” concept for entrepreneurs is Biznik – who tout “radical self promotion” and the idea that marketing is changing. If you are good, with something great to offer, people will find you. Biznik members offer events to other members, often with very low fees to participate. In the Biznik Manifesto, collaboration rather than competition is encouraged, and interesting face-to-face events coupled with great technology is the way to go. Check them out, and notice that anyone, anywhere can join Biznik (there are now members in 39 countries). We have strong Chamber of Commerce organizations throughout our region. While they are not for everyone, they do serve a broad base of constituents and are the business backbone of many communities. The Washington State Chambers of Commerce listing is a good source to find your community’s local business group. Take a look at Oregon’s Chamber listings, Idaho’s, Montana’s, and Wyoming’s.
