Women-For-Hire

When in transition and networking for your next big opportunity, jobseekers have a wide variety of options.  For starters, you might attend job ministries at your local church, career resource centers, local chambers of commerce or trade associations.  Another possibility is to be on the lookout for job fairs that periodically come to your town.

Recently, I attended a career expo held by the ‘Women-For-Hire’ organization at Navy Pier in Chicago.  ‘Women- For-Hire’ (www.womenforhire.com.) promotes itself as “the leading women's and diversity career recruitment specialist, offering comprehensive products and services exclusively for top employers in every field that support and enhance your company's commitment to diversity.”  The purpose of these events is to bring together and connect highly talented professional women with recruiters and hiring managers from the top corporations in America.

A brief sampling of the several hundred corporations who have participated at one time or another in the career expos reads as a ‘who’s who’ on a Fortune 500 list:

Abbott Laboratories, Avon, Best Buy, Cisco, Citigroup, Coca-Cola,

Dell, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, General Dynamics, GlaxoSmithKline,

Hewitt Associates, IBM, KPMG, Lockheed Martin, Merck,

Morgan Stanley, New York Life, Northrop Grumman, Oracle, Pepsi,

Raytheon, Schlumberger, Time Warner, Wells Fargo, etc.

Currently ‘Women-for-Hire’ hosts their career expos in 11 cities—Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, St. Louis, Tampa, New York, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, San Diego, & Washington D.C.  On average, between 40 and 60 major corporations will have a booth at any event.  The recruiters and hiring managers are typically looking for professional women with a minimum of 3 years experience, although entry positions are available.  The number of women who attend varies depending upon the location.  Typically New York draws the biggest crowd with approximately 1000 women in attendance.  About 500 women attended the recent Chicago event.

In addition to connecting female jobseekers with top firms, the ‘Women-for-Hire’ expo provides career coaches who critique participants’ resumes from start to finish.  Although the Chicago expo officially lasted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., there was still a long line of women waiting to get their resumes critiqued when I departed.  ‘Women-for-Hire’ also offers a free subscription to its magazine that is published 3 times per year—fall, spring, and winter.  Their website provides a job board and a career network on which you can create your own profile.
