The Power of Questions When NetWorking

By Paul Morris, Mid-Atlantic Bureau Chief           Paul's Bio

Recently I accepted a new position, Executive Director with our local Chamber of Commerce. And no I haven’t updated my Bio to include this. I did reach out to our own, CEO, Editor-in-Chief and “King of Business NetWorking,” Adam Kovitz for a name of someone that is familiar with the daily operation of a Chamber. Adam referred me to 21 year veteran in his own backyard, Clark Shuster. Adam it turns out is very active in that organization, the Lower Bucks County Chamber of Commerce, also known as the LBCCC you may visit them at: www.lbccc.org/calendar.

Yes, I am taking the long road to get the real story. However, without this information, it’s just another Chamber story. I did as any good NetWorker would do with a referral and reached out to Clark Shuster. I had no intention of this becoming my article; however, after my conversation it became clear there was a story.

As I mentioned earlier, Clark Shuster is the President of LBCCC. When questioning him on operations at his Chamber other questions just kept coming out. He shared with me that his Chamber has a roster of 1200 businesses and over 1500 members. I imagined what it would be like to have so many people in an organization and the rigors of making sure everyone is heard. Clark stated there are a total of 6 Chamber employees to help manage the massive e-mails, faxes and phone calls. Not to mention the scheduling of events.

While we discussed our game plans and the upcoming events, he mentioned the Holiday NetWorking Joint Business Card Exchange. This event was started in 1987 and has been a staple ever since. The members enjoy an evening of NetWorking with their neighbors the Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. The Chambers work together and pick a location where the business is a member of both Chambers. Yes, it is well attended and it gives everyone an opportunity to meet new contacts.

While Clark told me of the monthly events his Chamber hosts, I was impressed with the scheduling they have set in place. Well organized and set on specific days. Plus, I learned their Chamber office can easily hold 80 to 90 individuals in a theater style seating arrangement. What an opportunity to be the center of a community and facilitate so many people. Clark stated they hold Luncheon events there at the office. It’s extremely convenient to invite a guest to attend. What better way to attract new members.

If you’re one of the lucky people that live in the area, I’m sure you’re already a member. If you’re not a member of the LBCCC, what are you waiting for? Visit Clark and the others at the Chamber and sign-up. For your ease here’s a link to their Calendar of Events: www.lbccc.org/calendar.
