Solo Sez Practitioners Are Not AloneBy SCOTT R. FORCINO Esq., Legal Editor Email article to a friend This month I explored the world of the solo practitioner. By definition, this means the attorney that works alone, possibly with an office staff and/or a paralegal to handle routine matters. A web-site ABA Solo Center, however, gives these solos a voice to each other and forms a valuable network and professional resource. This site is a Listserv and is free and is available through the ABA (American Bar Association). Attorneys can either read the online discussions and not publicly participate or may respond to another solosez member with a private email. The one rule of participation states that one must send a message introducing themself to the group prior to posting a message to the group. Topic areas include software, substantive inquiries, client referrals and questions/answers. Articles regarding separate categories or "threads" are archived and catalogued for later review. Attorneys give information and request answers regarding billing, phone systems, ethics, small business banking, legal literature and client relations. All elements of solo law practice are explored and evaluated in-depth and insight is gained. There is a convention promoted through the ABA for solos in October in Philadelphia. A solosez user group is an active part of the solo chapter of the ABA. Solos comprise a majority of the legal professional and as such, need a voice in the ABA. The Solo Practitioner Division and www.abanet.org/soloseznet/ affords these solos this voice. It is an interesting commentary that a web-site is the means by which solos can benefit themselves and others. Please check out www.abanet.org/soloseznet/ to learn more about this free service.
