Creativity in NetWorkingBy Harvey Mathason, Contributing Writer Harvey's Bio Email article to a friendHow would you like to miss an extraordinary opportunity simply by not asking a question. Mathew 7:7 in the bible says "Ask and it shall be given, and seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened." I was reminded about asking questions in a simple way recently when I was at The Hudson restaurant in Hilton Head South Carolina. Upon leaving the restaurant, a sign on the hostesses’ podium said "No Sniveling" or no whining. I rhetorically asked the waitress if I could have a copy. Not expecting to get one. Lo and behold our waitress brought me out a bumper sticker with the sign. When I worked for The Rohm and Haas Company, I was the leader of "All Thinks Considered" a group designed to bring creativity into the company. I suggested that we bring in Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to speak. Mihaly is renowned in the subject of creativity and has written such books as "Flow" and "Creativity." My "All Thinks Considered" group thought the idea was worthless to pursue because it would cost too much and the company would never approve it. I decided to pursue the idea anyway and three months later Mihaly spoke at our company. All it took was taking a leap and asking that he speak. On another occasion, in the creativity world, I asked Michael Gelb, author of Thinking Like Leonardo DeVinci, if I could interview him. The interview was to be published in FOCUS, the news letter of the American Creativity Association. Michael agreed to the interview. Several people asked me how I got the interview. I replied, "I simply asked." In the realm of networking, simply ask people to network with you. Ask them to have lunch, talk on the phone, or to get together for social events. Book SuggestionA great book to motivate to you to ask for what you want is "The Aladdin Factor" By Jack Canfield. Open new worlds by tuning into your creative energy!
