Networking Your Website - Commenting on Blogs

Did you know that you can drive an unbelievable amount of traffic to your website, just by placing comments on other people’s blogs?

A web surfer who is interested in what a blog has to say, will usually read the comments. If there is something in your comment that sparks the curiosity of the surfer, they will click your name, and find themselves on your website or blog.

Below are some interesting statistics you should be aware of.

  • According to iProspect, 1 in 3 internet users are taking advantage of user generated content to help them make a decision to buy or not to buy something.
  • The average person spends 3 hours per day online, compared to 1.7 hours a day watching television.
  • According to eMarketer, 51% of internet users spend most of their time reading and watching personal content that is created by other people. They are cruising through the world-wide-web, reading, viewing, and looking at what other people are talking about.
  • Statistics show that 70% of people research online before making a purchasing decision. (And that by the way includes local service businesses).

What this means for you is that as a business person, you need to be in the path of your target audience. Whether you are in product or service sales, you need to be where your target audience is spending their time, so that they find you! It’s through browsing blogs and other social media, that people may discover you, and find that you are a solution to their problem!

So where do you start?

First of all, you’ve got to start by making a commitment that you are not going to spam everyone’s blog with your 30 second commercial. No one wants to hear your sales pitch. Save that for your own blog. If you are going to make a comment, you need to stay on topic to what the discussion is.

Try to comment on blogs that reach your target audience. Think about what types of things your target audience may be reading. Are you targeting parents, are you targeting sports enthusiasts, are you targeting business professionals, or entrepreneurs? What might they be interested in, and where are they hanging out?

Typically, when you comment on a blog, you will have a place to:

  1. write your name
  2. put in your email ( which by the way is not publicly posted)
  3. and most importantly, you can add the url of your website of blog

There are many good places to go to find blogs to comment on. Some popular ones are:

Just type in a keyword, and you will get a list of blogs that have just been updated related to those keywords.

If you comment regularly on certain blogs, people will get to know you. And remember, people do business with people they like and trust.

I recommend that you make a habit to comment on at least 5 blogs per day. (If you can’t do this, you might consider hiring this out to an internet marketing professional who understands social media marketing).

Make sure you keep an eye on the daily and weekly stats of your website and blog, so that you can get information such as where your visitors are coming from, how long they are staying, what keywords they are using to find you, etc.
