Creativity in NetWorkingBy Harvey Mathason, Contributing Writer Harvey's Bio Email article RSS feedThe Art of Managing Yourself“Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of.” Everything in life happens in a framework of time. In order to network effectively, you need to have the time to network. The most important thing for you to do is to establish a meaning in life, to establish a mission, and to create something you love to do. Your mission becomes something you organize time around. One thing to realize is that time management is not the goal. No, you can’t manage time. You can only manage yourself. Before mentioning the details of managing yourself, I would like to say that management should not be overly-rigid. You should spend a portion of the day being spontaneous, having fun, and doing things you love other than work. Of course your time should be balanced between work, family life, and time spent with your friends. Managing yourself involves planning what to do and doing what you plan. One of the best ideas for managing yourself is the “To Do List.” When Charles Schwab started Bethlehem Steel in the early 1900’s he commissioned Ivy Lee, a management consultant, to come up with an idea for his managers to get more done during the day. He advised that each evening each manager write down and prioritize things to be done the next day. The next day the managers were to proceed to do the items in priority order. If they did not complete the items, they were to continue working on them the next day. Ivy Lee told Schwab to use the idea for a month then send him a check for what he thought it was worth. Schwab sent him a check for $25,000, a huge amount for the 1900’s. A “To Do List” is a good start but is not the answer to everything needed to manage yourself. You need to assure yourself that your priorities are well thought out and fit into the big picture you are creating. Reflective thinking is needed for your progress. Finally, energy is integrally related to self management. Ask yourself “What gives me energy, what takes it away?” Briefly, positive thoughts, positive people, good nutrition, exercise and completing tasks would give you energy; the opposite would take energy away.
