NY Xpo for Business ShowBy Ruth Gatling, Mid-Atlantic Bureau Chief Email article RSS feed
On November 28th I traveled into Manhattan to go to the 2007 NY Xpo for Business Show at the Jacob Javitz center. What a show! There where about 600 booths and over 30 free seminars. As a matter of fact, the show itself was free. That’s right, no admission fee. The event started with the New York Times kick-off breakfast with keynote speaker Michael Rogers, New York Times’ Futurist-in-residence. He spoke about the advancement of technology, the challenges and opportunities for small and mid-size businesses to take advantage of the technology to get in front of prospects and customers and what to look forward to in the future. Lunch offered a chance to listen and learn from Donny Deutsch. Mr. Deutsch is an entrepreneur, author and host of CNBC’s show, “The big idea with Donny Deutsch.” Neither of the meals were free, but well worth the price of admission for the information and, yes, another networking opportunity. You could reserve a table for ten, or pay a single fee and sit with people you might not know, but would before the end of the meal. I went with a colleague of mine and each of us signed up for three free seminars ranging in topics from doing great presentations to closing a sale to using CRM marketing techniques. We met at lunch to share what we had learned and exchange information on the business booths we found most intriguing. One of the services represented at the Xpo that I really want to share is incbiznet.com. Developed by Inc magazine, it’s still in Beta mode, but a great online networking tool. Its membership is restricted to privately owned companies and the scope of information and services is formidable. Check it out, sign up and expand your network. I can tell you now, from personal experience, this show was well worth it. Not only walking the floor (miles, so you get a good workout while your building your business contacts), but to meet fellow business people, see some new products and services and make some really good contacts. All these things made the trip a great networking experience. |
