Alas- Lassie has a New Task!

My recent acquisition of a new best friend, "man's best friend" to be exact though I am a woman, inspired me to do a little research. I rescued my dog Jake from a local Humane Society, but prior to his time at the shelter he had been picked up by animal services so there was no prior history on him. He was so cute and very sweet however, that didn't bother me. He seemed to have a very likable demeanor. One of the first things I noticed upon bringing him home was that he was very timid around other people as well as other animals. I had an epiphany; dog park! What a better place to familiarize your animal with both people and pets. I was determined to have a dog as social as I!

Once I started looking up information on all the swinging local spots for our four legged companions, I realized how much some people use their pets for their own personal socialization. I was well aware of sites like Dogster.com, where humans immortalize their canines and "every dog has a webpage". What I came across that intrigued me was an article on social networking for dogs. It was not the concept of socializing our animals that surprised me of course, but specifically a new device being tested which will enable the owners of the animals to be social with one another also long after the visit to the park has ended. The article written earlier this year boasts that this could be "the next step in the social networking revolution". Here's how this works.

A startup company called SNIF Labs (Social Networking In Fur) created a small device that can be easily worn around a dog's collar that exchanges pet and owner information once in close proximity of another device. This information is automatically uploaded online and able to be viewed upon arriving back at home. One of the main concepts behind this technology is that even though most people are willing to chat in a dog park like environment, they usually stick to exchanging words about their pets, not themselves, some of the time even withholding their first name. With the aid of this invention, people won't have to worry if they forget a dog's name, or are perhaps a little gun shy to give their own.

Being in the matchmaking industry, I understand the importance of compatibility, especially when it comes to the world of pet enthusiasts. The movie "Must Love Dogs" was made for a reason! Dog lovers are an extremely passionate community, and their common love makes a good base for potential compatibility. Of course that does not necessarily mean single dog owners should be searching for love primarily at dog parks, but this new device might just make a few love connections after all.

The other reasoning behind this creation, which has nothing to do with social networking but is definitely worth mentioning, is that dog owners can also monitor their beloved animal's behavior online as well. This includes everything from sleeping, eating, walking, and even being able to see when their dog "goes potty". A drop in normal daily activity may indicate to the owner that the dog is ill.

The collar has been going through the testing process as of June earlier this year and is available only for preorder at this time. Interested or would like more information? Visit http://www.sniflabs.com/.
