As everybody who reads my columns knows, LinkedIn is my main online way of networking with people. I love LinkedIn.com and I spend considerable amount of time using LinkedIn.

There are about 150,000 Canadians listed on LinkedIn. So connecting up with them is possible, but time consuming. They are spread far and wide.

One of my core ways to connect up with other Canadians on LinkedIn is through LinkedIn Groups.

Groups are a terrific way of connecting up with people with whom you have a common interest. You can join groups that somebody else has created and you can invite others to join groups that you have created.

But remember – groups are not a way to instantly create millions of connections – if you are only connected to Alice through a group – you can only see Alice you can’t see Alice’s network.

I am always out of invitations – so a great way to connect to somebody when you both don’t have invitations – is for both of you to be connected to a group. When I do get some invitations from LinkedIn – I send them to my members of my groups before anyone else. Usually I use up my invitations very rapidly.

By the way – by clicking on each of the groups listed below – a window will open to let you join the group.

Here are the groups that are dedicated to Canadians.

My main way of connecting through to Canadians is The Networking Canadians group. It has over 650 members, growing by about 10 or so a week. Click here to join the Networking Canadians group.

The Networking Toronto group is for connecting people to people in Toronto except for those people who hate losing to the Leafs, Jays, and Raptors. Click here to join the Networking Toronto group. This group has about 500 members.

The CATA group is for people involved or interested in the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance which is 28,000 Canadians in High Tech, Biotech, CleanTech, and Manufacturing. This group has about 225 members and you can join here. You do not need to be a member of CATA to join this group.

Here is a group with a small number of Canadians interested in Networking.

The Networking For Success group connects up people who work on their success. This is a large group with over 876 members and you can join here. About 5% of them are Canadians.

I have a few other groups with a smattering of Canadians in them. You can find out all about in my larger article called Five Ways To Use LinkedIn Groups Effectively.

Before I go, let me tell you a little about how to find Canadians in any LinkedIn group you belong to. As an example, I will show you how to find other Canadians who are marathon runners.

  1. Select the “Groups” link from the “Your Network” list at the bottom of every page.
  2. Select the “My Groups” link.
  3. Find a Group that is appropriate to the Canadians you want to meet. For my example, I find the Marathoner’s group (join here). I then select the “View Members” link.
  4. That brings me to the Search tab with all the members of the group only. I then select the “Refine Search Results” link.
  5. Then in the refine window, I select the “Location” drop down menu and select “Located in or near
  6. I then select the “Country” drop down menu and select Canada
  7. I then clear the postal code in the Postal Code field.
  8. Then I press [Search] button. All done – you now have all the Canadians interested in the specific thing you are interested in. Which happens to be about 25 Canadians from the 500 or so Marathon members.

Till Next Month!
