Diversity

Sara Brightman performed in a video, Nagrywa, with Paris Hilton.  What an outlandish performance of diametrically endowed performers- Brightman the versatile, eloquent singer, Hilton the beautiful lackluster performer. Why did Brightman perform with Paris Hilton?  The answer is that Brightman likes to take chances and enjoys diversity and versatility.  In the words of Sara Brightman herself, “Being varied is something I do instinctively and naturally.  I feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment.  Everything is in tune: the voice, the type of music, who I am and who people think I am.” But what does diversity have to do with networking?

Diversity will enrich your life.  It will make your life more interesting, more exciting and more creative.  The creative aspect comes from being exposed to different ideas and different ways of thinking.  People will want to network with you.  In the last few years what books have you read that are the most different from the books you ordinarily read?  What different people or cultures have you contacted?  What places have you gone to that are different than the usual places that you go to?  What have you learned that is different from what you have already learned? What new languages have you learned?  What new hobbies have you taken on?  What new musical instruments have you learned to play?  These are simply examples of diversity.  Do some. You are certainly not expected to do all of them.

Let me give you an example of one of my experiences in diversity.  I was in Kenya, Africa and visited a Masai Village.  The Masai are a pastoral and hunting people that dress in red.  They have no electricity, drink blood, and live in huts made of cow dung.  If a man wished to marry, they had to offer seven cows to the bride’s father. The men also had to go through the ritual of killing a lion.  Despite living in poverty, the tribe people seemed happy.  One of them offered to trade my digital watch for a Masai blanket.  I agreed and we made the exchange.  The blanket, of course, was red.

How can I really describe the experience I had in words?  All I can say is that it was an enriching experience and it gave me a better understanding of the Masai.  It made me wonder what they missed by not having computers and cell phones.  I remember them having a jumping contest.  They simply jumped up and down and the chief judged the winner.  As for my red blanket, every time I use it on a cold night it reminds me of the Masai.
