About the Aspen Music Festival and School

Music Director David Zinman presides over the nine-week summer Festival that comprises more than 350 events, including orchestral concerts, chamber music, opera, contemporary music, master classes, lectures, and kids' programs. Concerts take place daily at the 2,050-seat Benedict Music Tent, an acoustically superior and award-winning permanent structure that made its debut in 2000, the beautifully restored Victorian Wheeler Opera House, the jewel-like Harris Concert Hall, and in churches and smaller halls around town. Many events are free, lawn seating outside the tent is always free, and other tickets range up to $80.

Aspen is also where the world's brightest young musicians come to study with the world's foremost instructors, where thousands of musical influences converge in a white-hot crucible of creativity. Year after year, the Music School has inspired young musicians to mature into some of the most brilliant and creative classical artists in the world, from New York to Paris, from Tokyo to Rome. Generation after generation, masters of the craft pass along their knowledge and passion for music to students, merging lines of musical and cultural differences and creating a constantly growing cycle of artistic magnificence. Aspen maintains five performing orchestras, each of which plays in the Benedict Music Tent. Conductors and soloists for AMFS orchestras are some of the finest artists on the concert circuit today.

The Festival and School was founded by intellectuals and visionaries Elizabeth and Walter Paepcke of Chicago and is rooted in the lofty idea that it is the combination of art and nature that fosters the growth of the human spirit. Nearly sixty years later, this guiding principle still informs every aspect of the organization."

Fall in Aspen, Colorado

Lately, I've had the wonderful privilege of spending more time up in Aspen, Colorado. It is just an incredibly beautiful location nestled in the Colorado Rockies. There are few vantage points rising up the highway out of Denver and meandering and climbing to the highest points in Vail Pass, that one is not overcome with the grandeur of Colorado and its mountains.

For classical music enthusiasts, this summer is the continuation of one of the most renowned Music Festivals in the World. Established 60 years ago, The Aspen Music Festival provides an opportunity for one to engage and showcase not only one's master performance skills, by invitation to perform, but an opportunity to also involve oneself in the master classes available to adults and children.

As a trained classical musician, for the first 18 years of my life, this festival is something not to miss. Occurring over a 9 week period there are musicians from all over the world who come here to perform, and the array of styles and musicianship allows for even most classical music "phobist" to find something fascinating to attend.

Traditional orchestral performances, Opera, Chamber Orchestra and even Ballet abound. My tastes, however are attracted by a solo performance of acclaimed guitarist, "Isbin", playing a famous Spanish Concerto for Classical Guitar is a passionate expose by composer Rodrigo, whose intensity and lyricism tell the story of the Spanish character. Performance date is August 3, 2008

Another performance that catches my attention is "A Hot Evening of Cuban Jazz," slated for July 22, 2008 with Cuban phenomenon Isaac Delgado, called "the heart and soul of Timba music," will heat up the Tent with his cool combination of traditional Cuban music, salsa, jazz and rock.

Through out the festival over 750 Music Students come to the event to study and perform with the world's top artists.

A great opportunity to network in the industry of Classical Music Performance, Study and Education, while enjoying the pristine beauty of one of the most exquisite places on earth, Aspen, Colorado. A small town with a population of only 6,000, Aspen is an oasis of culture and recreation. The pristine environment makes it an ideal place for new discoveries.

( I can vouch for this as I always have some amazing AHA's driving both to and from the lofty mountain destination.)

Aspen, with 30 art galleries, 100 restaurants, and frequent talks by world class leaders, intellectuals, and local theater, film, jazz, literature, and dance festivals in addition to the AMFS, there is plenty to discover.

For more information and schedule about The Aspen Music Festival, log on to www.aspenmusicfestival.com. And please do enjoy my backyard playground, The Colorado Rockies.

Cheers to your continued success.
